Mick FanningIT wasn't that long ago that surfing superstar Mick Fanning drove to the beach in a rusty 1989 Ford Laser. Yesterday, the world No. 4 cruised to Kirra in a $124,000 bright red Porsche Boxster.
Fanning had just been given the car from Porsche Centre Gold Coast as part of a 12-month sponsorship deal.
The powerful sports car is a far cry from the 'piece of crap' Laser he first owned.
With the new car came a more stylish Fanning. Cruising with the roof down, sunglasses on his head and wearing a collared shirt he looked nothing like your 'typical' surfer. He looked classy, sophisticated - and a little anxious.
"I am really excited. I cannot believe Porsche are letting me drive it," said Fanning.
"I have got to be careful, I don't want to scratch it.
"It's going to be tough to get a board in it, but I'll find a way.
"At the moment it is just cool to drive around in it and have fun."
Unfortunately, Fanning will be cruising the streets in the passenger seat after tearing his hamstring off the bone in a season-ending injury last month.
'"I'll be sitting in the passenger seat for a while yet."
