07.06.04 - ANDREW KING FUNDRAISER

STARTING 15th June, the world’s best surfers will be gathering in Cronulla to help raise money for WQS surfer, Andrew King.
Eight weeks ago, the Andy came close to losing his life when he was allegedly punched and knocked unconscious outside a Cronulla nightclub. He fell back onto his head, fracturing the back of his skull on the pavement. The fracture splintered around the base of his skull towards his ear, leaving his hearing and balance bones fractured also. The injury has left Andy deaf and without balance. Doctors say the balance will eventually come back, but to hear again, Andy will have an expensive operation involving cochlear implants.
To help Andy not only hear again, but also get back on his feet, a fundraiser has been organised, Saturday June 19.
Some of the best surfers in the world are coming to compete in a surfing competition named King Of The Beach. Surfers include former world champions Mark Occhilupo, Tom Carroll, Barton Lynch and Damien Hardmen, plus top WCT surfers, Mick Fanning, Nathan Hedge, Dean Morrison, Michael Lowe, Beau Emerton, Luke Hitchings, Tom Whitaker, Phil MacDonald and Kieren Perrow. The surfing starts at 9am at North Cronulla Beach with prizes, raffles a Calcutta and various entertainments.
ASP boss and former world champion Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew has also encouraged the support of WCT surfers. “It is great to hear of Andy’s fighting spirit and determination to get back his hearing and balance so that he can in the short term resume surfing and in the long term regain a quality of life. It is also pleasing to hear of the support Andy is receiving from his mates in the surfing tribe. ASP also would like to support Andy by providing a waiver for WCT surfers to participate in the surfing event in benefit of Andy.”
That night will be the Celebrity Sports Auction at Cronulla Leagues Club, starting at 7pm. Such items include signed surfboards from six world champions, plus the current top five surfers in the world. There are also signed and framed football jerseys from the Waratahs, NSW State Of Origin and Sydney Swans teams. Plus items from stars such as Steve Waugh, Merrick and Rosso, Jeff Fenech and Andrew Johns, Tickets are $20 at the door.
Come and help Andrew King hear and surf again.
