12.12.04 - BEAU’S FINAL FLING
AFTER 12 years on tour as a charger, both in and out of the water, Aussie goofy Beau ‘Naughty’ Emerton has had a shocker of a season in 2004, and goes into the Rip Curl Pipeline Masters knowing that even if he wins the event, he cannot make the WCT cut for next season. Life might beginning anew for Naughty in 2005. We had a quick chat with him:
SARGE: SO BEAU, HERE YOU ARE ON ABOUT YOUR 12TH TRIP TO THE NORTH SHORE, AND SADLY, IT LOOKS LIKE IT MIGHT BE YOUR LAST ONE AS A WCT SURFER. COMING HERE YOU ARE RATED 46TH ON THE WCT, AND 60TH OR SO ON THE WQS. WHAT HAPPENED MATE?
BEAU: Nothing! (laughs) Well, nothing good anyway. I guess I just had a crappy year. I had a bad start to the season, and it got worse. Once I found I was in that hole, I tried turning to backing up by doing the WQS, but nothing happened there either. So yeah, here I am seeing myself coming last in the ratings (laughs).

Beau Emerton
What's next for Beau Emerton? He's already had some tow-in experience, but
maybe he's going to be thrown in the deep end by Red Bull with RCJ?

WELL GOOD ON YOU FOR HAVING THE COURAGE TO LAUGH ABOUT IT, BUT AFTER HAVING YOU WATCHED YOU SURFING SINCE GROMMETHOOD, AND ON TOUR SINCE THE AGE OF 17, IT’S SAD AND A BIT OF A SHOCK.
Yeah it is a bit of a shock. I suppose it all has to come to an end one day, and I would have liked to have had a few more years in there, but even if I win Pipe’, I can’t even make the cut. I’m sure it’s going to be a rude shock to the system. It’s been my life. I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to do yet, but I’ve got a few possibilities in the wings. Where one door shuts, another opens! I’m sort of looking forward to it in a weird kind of way.

Beau Emerton
Will Beau's unexpected early elimination from the O'Neill World Cup of
Surfing be his last WQS result? Surely not.

YOU OBVIOUSLY FOUGHT ALL YEAR, BUT YOU ENDED UP WITH SOMETHING LIKE SIX 33rds. THAT’S HEAVY!
Yeah, I haven’t made it past the third round all year, and you just can’t do that. I had a bunch of 33rds and maybe three or four 17ths. Once you start bad, your seed that you worked so hard for the previous year is suddenly sliding back, and then you’re going to be continually coming up against the high seeds in the second and third round, the top notch guys, and you’ve really got your work cut out for you there. You’ve really got to perform at your best. I was confident in the back of my mind; I tried, but it just didn’t happen.

Beau Emerton
Forehand or backhand, Beau has always been loose and fearless in the bigger
sized stuff.

IT MUST HAVE BEEN TOUGH GOING BACK TO GROVELLING WITH THE GROMMETS ON THE WQS CIRCUIT?
Yeah, my heart definitely wasn’t in two foot waves, and paddling out with three other guys.
In the WCTs, I let myself down not getting results in places that I usually do okay in, and depend on to bolster my ratings – places like Teahupoo, where I got a 33rd to Hedgey, and then Fiji was another disappointment. I think my surfing is still there, and I still love competing against the top guys, but I figure if I can’t compete against them, I’m not going to go and slog it out in shitty waves with all those other guys. I tried to match it with the big guys, but this year, that hasn’t happened. I just look back at simple things, like losing in the last few seconds in the 17th round at Bells to Jake Paterson. That’s how cut-throat it is. A heat isn’t over until the fat lady sings. Little things, losing a couple of heats early in the year just changed the year.

Beau Emerton
Naughty has always been keen on working out on the boxing bag, as well as a
collector of sports memorabilia...even his own. The boxing cape was promo
support from Cult for an exhibition boxing match Beau took part in last
year.

CAN YOU PUT YOUR FINGER ON ANY SPECIFIC SHORT-COMING?
Not really. It’s been a tough year behind the scenes for me with a lot of personal stuff going on that’s been hard to deal with. My brother’s new baby was born with some heavy complications that have been ongoing, my mother had a stroke, my Dad got sick, I lost my grandmother, and then we all lost Twiggy in Europe. More than anything it’s all opened my eyes to the fact that if I don’t qualify, it’s not the end of the world. Up till this year, I’ve been so lucky and blessed to not have any problems in my life, or my family, but just in the last six months there’s been a barrage of stuff affecting my headspace. That’s not to blame for me not making it, but it’s had a lot to do with me opening my eyes and seeing the big picture. I will miss the tour, but there are lost of other things out there to do, new adventures and what not.

Beau Emerton
You can rest assured Beau Emerton will be charging for a big result in what
looks like being his final WCT event, the Rip Curl Pipeline Masters. We're
gonna miss the Naughty bugger.

WHEN YOU SIGNED UP WITH CULT, YOU COMMENTED THAT YOUR SPONSORSHIP INCLUDED CONTINUING AS THE SOCIAL AMBASSADOR ON TOUR, AND YOU’VE CONTINUED TO EARN YOUR BEAU ‘NAUGHTY’ TAG WHILE MOST OF THE REST OF THE TOUR HAVE BECOME A LITTLE MORE RESTRAINED. HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK ON THAT?
I don’t regret anything I’ve done (laughs). I’ve enjoyed myself, and I always will. That’s just me, and there’s no need to worry about me. A lot of people who don’t enjoy themselves a lot might think they’d like to have as much fun as I have. I don’t know if they do, but I’m always smiling and happy, and I’ve met a lot of good friends out there – and that’s the most important thing to me – making friends and enjoying myself. Surfing should definitely come first, and I should maybe not have that beer the night before, or whatever. These days you can’t really. I’ve tightened up a lot though the last few years…before contests anyway (laughs). I have fun, and if people don’t like it, then stuff ‘em.
SO YOU MENTIONED YOU PERHAPS HAVE A FEW OTHER DOORS OPENING.
Yeah, the sponsors I’ve got – Cult, Red Bull, Boost and Aloha, are all really great sponsors, and I’m lucky to have those guys. Cult are going along strong and there’s a few things happening there, which I can’t really talk about. I can help with product development and stuff. I’ve got a bit of knowledge there and I’m honest with them and say what I think. I think I can be pretty helpful there. That’s about all I know. I’m no brain surgeon! Red Bull mentioned something the other day about me hooking up with Ross Clarke-Jones…and I nearly choked! I mean, throw me in the deep end! But yeah, who knows, I could go the WQS next year, but my heart isn’t in it, so why bother. I’d really like to just go surfing. I don’t want to sound like a spoilt brat, but it seems like 10 years since I’ve been on some good boat trips and stuff, with just a few guys out. It constant pressure on the tour, and so I’m looking forward to cruising and doing some trips, doing different things and doing a bit of tow-in stuff – but not with Ross (laughs)!
WELL ALL THE BEST AND GOOD ON YOU MATE. I’M SURE EVERYONE WILL AGREE YOU REMAIN A GREAT TALENT AND CHARACTER FOR THE SPORT AND CULTURE. WE’VE BEEN PRIVILEGED TO HAVE BEAU ‘NAUGHTY’ ON TOUR.
Thanks mate.
